The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio (c. 1601–02)

Pyrrhonian skepticism

Sextus Empiricus · Agrippa
Caravaggio, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, c. 1601–02

Pyrrhonian skepticism aims not to prove that knowledge is impossible, but to suspend judgment when opposing considerations remain equipollent.

1The problem it solves

This is a different skeptical ambition from Cartesian doubt. The Pyrrhonist avoids the self-defeating claim “nothing can be known,” because that too would be a doctrine. Instead, arguments and counterarguments are balanced until assent is withheld. Suspension—epoché—is treated as an achievement of disciplined non-commitment.

2The idea

Ancient scepticism did not aim to prove that we know nothing. It aimed at epoché — suspension of judgment — and the tranquillity said to follow from ceasing to insist.

3Origin & context

Associated with Pyrrho and known principally through Sextus Empiricus. The later modes of Agrippa—regress, circularity, hypothesis, disagreement, relativity—are strategies for inducing suspension rather than premises in a dogmatic theory of skepticism.

4Canonical example

For any argument, an equally strong opposing argument can be found. So neither is asserted, and assent is withheld.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Suspending judgment on everything is impossible; action requires beliefs.

Reply. Pyrrhonists distinguish doctrinal assent from following appearances, habits, skills, and practical necessities. One can act without asserting a theory about ultimate justification.

Objection. The method secretly asserts that opposing arguments are equal, which is itself a belief.

Reply. The Pyrrhonist can present equipollence as how things appear rather than as a universal proposition. Critics question whether this linguistic restraint genuinely avoids commitment.

6Don't confuse it with

Pyrrhonian vs. Cartesian skepticism

Cartesian skepticism uses doubt in search of certainty or a foundation. Pyrrhonism seeks suspension and does not promise reconstruction from indubitable premises.

Suspension vs. indecision

Epoché is not confusion or lack of effort; it can result from having investigated both sides and finding no justified asymmetry.

7Common mistakes

  • Summarizing Pyrrhonism as “we know nothing,” which turns it into the dogmatic claim it tries to avoid.
  • Thinking suspension requires paralysis in ordinary action.

8In your work

The disciplined version of “I don't know”, treated as an achievement rather than a failure to have an opinion.

9Check yourself

After examining two technically serious but balanced arguments, you deliberately decline to assert either conclusion. What would a Pyrrhonist say you achieved?

Show answer

Epoché—suspension of judgment. The achievement lies in resisting a claim that outruns the available asymmetry in reasons, not in proving both sides false.
