The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio (c. 1601–02)

Cartesian skepticism

Descartes; al-Ghazālī ran a strikingly similar programme centuries earlier
Caravaggio, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, c. 1601–02

Cartesian skepticism uses methodical doubt to strip away every belief vulnerable to deception until only what survives radical doubt can serve as a foundation.

1The problem it solves

The Cartesian project asks whether certainty can be rebuilt after granting the strongest skeptical possibilities. Doubt the senses, dreaming, even mathematics under an evil deceiver; if a belief survives that procedure, it has a special claim to foundational status.

2The idea

Methodical doubt: discard everything that can possibly be doubted in order to find something that cannot, and rebuild from there. The evil demon is the instrument that makes the doubt total.

3Origin & context

René Descartes made the method famous in the Meditations; al-Ghazālī had pursued a strikingly similar program centuries earlier. Descartes’ cogito—roughly, the occurrence of thinking guarantees the thinker’s existence in that act—functions as the first indubitable point from which reconstruction begins.

4Canonical example

Doubt the senses, doubt mathematics, doubt the external world — and arrive at the one thing doubting itself cannot touch.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Methodological doubt sets an unrealistically high standard: ordinary knowledge does not require certainty against every deception scenario.

Reply. That is the dominant fallibilist response. Descartes is not describing ordinary standards but searching for an Archimedean foundation. The critic must then explain why lesser, defeasible standards are sufficient for knowledge.

Objection. The cogito may establish that thinking occurs, but not the rich, persisting self Descartes needs for reconstruction.

Reply. This narrows rather than destroys the first certainty. Contemporary readings often treat the minimal secure content as 'there is thinking' or 'I exist while thinking,' leaving substantial metaphysical work still to be done.

6Don't confuse it with

Cartesian and Pyrrhonian skepticism

Cartesian doubt is instrumental: doubt is used to find certainty and rebuild knowledge. Pyrrhonism aims at suspension of judgment rather than a final foundation.

Methodological doubt and actual disbelief

Descartes need not sincerely believe every skeptical hypothesis. The method provisionally withholds assent to test which beliefs can survive.

7Common mistakes

  • Treating the evil demon as Descartes’ final worldview rather than a device in a reconstruction project.
  • Assuming the cogito proves the external world; it establishes a minimal first-person certainty, after which further arguments are required.

8In your work

The original stress test: deliberately assume maximal adversarial error and see what survives. Red-teaming is Descartes with a project plan.

9Check yourself

Why is “I am now thinking” harder for the Cartesian skeptic to doubt than “there is a table in front of me”?

Show answer

A deceiver could cause the table experience without a table, but the very occurrence of being deceived or doubting is itself a thinking event. The attempt to doubt it instantiates what is being asserted.
