Logic and argumentation

Rembrandt van Rijn, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, 1632

Logic and argumentation ask what follows from what, which hidden warrants connect evidence to conclusions, and how burdens and fallacies structure rational disagreement.

1The problem it solves

A dispute can fail even when everyone has the same facts because the inference is invalid, a premise is false, a warrant is hidden, or the burden is assigned differently. Argument analysis makes those layers visible instead of treating disagreement as a collision of conclusions.

2The idea

The machinery of inference, and the diagnostic vocabulary for what is going wrong in a conversation. Formal logic tells you what follows from what. Informal logic tells you why an argument that follows perfectly well can still be worthless — and why one that is technically invalid can still be persuasive and even reasonable.

For anyone who argues professionally this is the most immediately usable branch on the map.

3Origin & context

The branch runs from Aristotelian validity and classical inference through modern formal logic to informal argumentation, including Toulmin’s claim–grounds–warrant structure and contemporary analysis of fallacies, burden of proof, steelmanning, and rhetorical maneuvers.

4Canonical example

The question is rarely “is the conclusion true?” It is “does it follow, from what, and on what unstated principle?”

5Objections & replies

Objection. Formal logic strips away context, uncertainty, and defeasible reasoning, so it poorly models real policy argument.

Reply. That is why formal and informal tools complement each other. Validity diagnoses entailment; Toulmin exposes warrants and qualifiers; probabilistic and defeasible reasoning handle uncertainty. No single formalism needs to do every job.

Objection. Fallacy labels often become rhetorical weapons rather than analysis.

Reply. Correct use requires reconstruction first. State the strongest premises and warrant, then show exactly why the inference fails. A label without the reconstruction is usually a substitute for reasoning.

6Don't confuse it with

Validity and soundness

Validity concerns the inferential form; soundness adds true premises. A correct conclusion can come from an unsound argument.

Evidence and warrant

Evidence is the grounds offered. The warrant is the usually unstated rule that licenses moving from those grounds to the claim.

7Common mistakes

  • Arguing over data when the real disagreement is an unstated warrant.
  • Treating the defeat of one argument as the defeat of the conclusion itself.

8In your work

Two weeks here will change how you sit in a meeting more than two months anywhere else on this map.

9Check yourself

Two people agree that a study found X but disagree whether X supports regulation Y. What Toulmin-style question should you ask before collecting more data?

Show answer

“What has to be true for X to support Y?” That exposes the warrant—often the actual location of disagreement—before adding more grounds that both sides may interpret differently.
