Equivocation

Rembrandt van Rijn, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, 1632

Equivocation makes one word do two different jobs inside one argument, creating the appearance of continuity where the meaning has changed.

1The problem it solves

Many disagreements survive because both sides keep using the same label while attaching different criteria to it. The argument then looks valid on paper because the repeated word hides the switch. Naming equivocation gives you a procedural cure: replace the contested word with explicit descriptions and see whether the inference still works.

2The idea

Using a key term in two different senses at different points in the same argument, so that a valid-looking structure conceals a change of subject.

3Origin & context

A classical informal fallacy, recognized since ancient treatments of sophistical refutation. Its modern importance is greatest in technical-policy language, where words such as “risk,” “material,” “efficient,” or “significant” can move between statistical, economic, legal, and ordinary senses without warning.

4Canonical example

“Risk” as variance in one premise and as probability of loss in the next. The argument is now about two different things.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Natural language is flexible; demanding one rigid meaning is unrealistic.

Reply. Correct. The problem is not polysemy itself but switching senses while relying on the audience to treat them as one. A legitimate argument can change meanings if it marks the change and does not transfer conclusions across senses without a bridge.

Objection. Sometimes the two senses overlap enough that the argument still works.

Reply. Then state the bridge explicitly. If the conclusion depends on the overlap, that overlap is a premise and should be defended rather than smuggled in by vocabulary.

6Don't confuse it with

Equivocation vs. ambiguity

Ambiguity is a property of an expression; equivocation is an argumentative move that exploits or fails to control that ambiguity across premises.

Equivocation vs. changing your mind

A speaker may legitimately refine a claim. Equivocation occurs when the argument silently borrows support earned by one meaning for a different meaning.

7Common mistakes

  • Arguing about the label instead of operationalizing what each side means by it.
  • Assuming shared terminology implies shared thresholds, measurement rules, or normative criteria.

8In your work

The reason to taboo the contested word and restate both positions without it. If the disagreement disappears, it was verbal.

9Check yourself

A memo says an event is “unlikely” meaning below 5%, then concludes it is “unlikely to matter” meaning economically small. What happened?

Show answer

Equivocation. The same word moved from probability to magnitude. The second claim needs a separate premise connecting low probability to low expected impact.
