Motte-and-bailey

Nicholas Shackel
Rembrandt van Rijn, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, 1632

A motte-and-bailey alternates between a bold useful claim and a modest defensible claim, borrowing the latter’s safety for the former’s impact.

1The problem it solves

Some positions survive criticism not because one claim is well defended, but because two claims are traded back and forth. The broad “bailey” does the rhetorical or policy work; under pressure the speaker retreats to the narrow “motte,” wins agreement, and later acts as if the stronger claim was vindicated. The concept exists to freeze the target of evaluation.

2The idea

Named after a medieval fortification: a comfortable but indefensible field (the bailey) beside a fortified mound (the motte) you retreat into when attacked.

The move: advance a strong, interesting, contestable claim. When challenged, retreat to a weak, obvious, unobjectionable version and defend that. Once the challenge passes, resume operating on the strong claim as though it had been established.

3Origin & context

Named by philosopher Nicholas Shackel after a medieval fortification: a desirable open bailey next to a defensible mound or motte. The argumentative pattern is a form of strategic ambiguity rather than a standard formal fallacy.

4Canonical example

“X is entirely socially constructed” → challenged → “I only mean context matters” → agreed → and later the strong claim is back in use.

5Objections & replies

Objection. People are entitled to qualify overbroad claims when challenged.

Reply. Absolutely. Revision is healthy if the stronger claim is withdrawn. The problem is reoccupying the stronger claim later while citing the defense of the weaker one as though it covered both.

Objection. The distinction between strong and weak versions can itself be subjective.

Reply. Then write both propositions explicitly and ask which one supports the disputed conclusion. If the policy follows only from the strong version, defending the weak version does not settle the issue.

6Don't confuse it with

Motte-and-bailey vs. equivocation

Equivocation shifts the meaning of a term; motte-and-bailey shifts between propositions of different strength. They often co-occur but are structurally distinct.

Motte-and-bailey vs. legitimate narrowing

Legitimate narrowing concedes the original claim was too strong. Motte-and-bailey preserves the benefits of the strong claim after retreating from it.

7Common mistakes

  • Letting agreement with the modest claim be recorded as agreement with the expansive one.
  • Debating labels instead of writing the two versions side by side and testing which one entails the conclusion.

8In your work

Underrated and extremely common in policy debate. The counter is to pin the claim down in writing: which version is being defended, and does the policy conclusion follow from the weak one?

9Check yourself

A speaker says “the model is useless,” retreats under challenge to “the model has important limitations,” then later cites the exchange as proof it should be discarded. What is the move?

Show answer

Motte-and-bailey. “Has important limitations” is the defensible motte; “is useless” is the stronger bailey doing the decision work.
