A straw man wins against a weakened substitute for the opponent’s actual position, leaving the real position untouched.
1The problem it solves
Arguments are only informative if they engage the view someone actually holds. Distortion can be deliberate, but more often it comes from compressing a complex claim into a version that is easier to criticize. The remedy is procedural rather than psychological: reconstruct first, obtain agreement on the reconstruction, then object.
2The idea
Refuting a weakened or distorted version of the opponent's position rather than the position they actually hold.
3Origin & context
A standard informal fallacy in modern argumentation theory. The exact phrase is relatively recent, but the underlying error—refuting a position nobody asserted—has been recognized in dialectical traditions for centuries.
4Canonical example
“You want more oversight” becomes “you want to shut the industry down”.
5Objections & replies
Objection. Sometimes the weaker version really is implied by what the speaker said.
Reply. Then show the entailment. If the original commitments logically lead to the weaker claim, criticizing it is not a straw man. The burden is to demonstrate the bridge rather than assume it.
Objection. Requiring opponents to approve every summary lets them evade criticism by endlessly refining their position.
Reply. Agreement on wording is a safeguard, not a veto. Once a fair formulation is fixed, later retreats can themselves be analyzed as qualification or motte-and-bailey movement.
6Don't confuse it with
Straw man vs. reductio ad absurdum
A reductio derives an unacceptable consequence from the opponent’s actual premises. A straw man substitutes premises they do not hold.
Straw man vs. simplification
Simplification is legitimate when it preserves the feature under dispute; distortion is not.
7Common mistakes
- Refuting the weakest internet version of a view and treating that as engagement with its strongest professional form.
- Assuming bad faith when a misunderstanding plus compressed language is enough to explain the distortion.
8In your work
The remedy is procedural: restate their view until they agree you have it, and only then object. It costs thirty seconds and removes the most common way of being right and ineffective.
9Check yourself
Before criticizing a colleague’s policy position, what single procedure most reliably prevents a straw man?
Show answer
Restate the position—including its strongest qualifications and warrant—until the colleague agrees that the reconstruction is fair; then attack that version.
