The problem of induction

David Hume
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

No finite record of observed regularity logically entails that the same regularity will continue in unobserved cases.

1The problem it solves

Induction is how empirical science moves from observed cases to general laws, future cases, and unseen populations. Hume’s problem is that the move cannot be justified deductively, and justifying it by saying induction has worked in the past is itself an inductive argument. The method that generates most empirical knowledge therefore lacks the kind of proof deduction enjoys.

2The idea

Hume's argument is short and has never been answered. Inductive inference assumes the future will resemble the past. That assumption cannot be established deductively, since its denial is not contradictory. Nor can it be established inductively, since that would use the very principle in question.

So every empirical generalisation you have ever made rests on something you cannot justify. This is not a reason to stop generalising; it is a reason to know what you are doing when you do.

3Origin & context

David Hume’s eighteenth-century treatment is canonical. He distinguishes “relations of ideas” from “matters of fact” and argues that inference beyond present experience relies on an expectation that nature is sufficiently uniform. That expectation cannot be established without circularity.

4Canonical example

The sun has risen every morning in recorded history. That fact entails nothing whatsoever about tomorrow morning.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Evolution or learning theory can explain why creatures that generalize from experience tend to survive; doesn’t that justify induction?

Reply. It can explain why the habit is adaptive and perhaps reliable in our environment, but the justification still uses empirical generalization from the world’s past structure. Hume’s logical point remains: no non-circular deduction guarantees future uniformity.

Objection. Bayesian updating solves induction by giving a rational rule for learning from evidence.

Reply. Bayes gives conditional consistency once priors and likelihood models are supplied; it does not derive those priors or guarantee the future resembles the modeled past. The inductive burden reappears in model choice and prior assumptions.

6Don't confuse it with

Induction and deduction

Deduction preserves truth if premises are true; induction can amplify information beyond the premises but is fallible. The tradeoff—new information for loss of certainty—is the point.

Problem of induction and confirmation bias

Hume’s problem is a normative/logical problem about projecting patterns at all. Confirmation bias is a psychological tendency to seek or interpret evidence selectively.

7Common mistakes

  • Responding 'but induction usually works' as if that were non-circular; the word 'usually' is already an inductive summary.
  • Treating the problem as a reason never to generalize. Hume shows the absence of deductive guarantee, not that empirical inference is practically dispensable.

8In your work

The hard ceiling on every out-of-sample forecast and on every model calibrated to a historical regime. Regime change is not an exotic risk; it is the default expectation that induction quietly assumes away.

9Check yourself

You have observed a stable coefficient for 20 years. What, strictly speaking, does those 20 years deductively entail about year 21?

Show answer

Nothing about the coefficient’s year-21 value follows deductively. Using the past pattern to project forward is an inductive move whose rationality depends on assumptions about stability, similarity, and the data-generating process.
