The demarcation problem

Popper · Laudan's 'demise of the demarcation problem'
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

The demarcation problem asks what distinguishes science from non-science; no single proposed criterion has cleanly captured scientific practice without excluding good science or admitting bad imitations.

1The problem it solves

The question matters institutionally because “scientific” affects credibility, funding, regulation, and public authority. Falsifiability was the most famous answer, but historical and methodological work showed that sciences use heterogeneous methods and often protect theories through anomalies. The modern lesson is to assess a bundle of epistemic practices rather than worship one test.

2The idea

What separates science from non-science? Falsifiability was the most famous proposed criterion; the consensus now is that no single criterion does the job cleanly.

3Origin & context

Popper framed falsifiability as a demarcation criterion partly against verificationism and pseudoscientific systems. Later philosophers, including Larry Laudan, argued that the search for a necessary-and-sufficient boundary had failed and that we should instead evaluate claims and methods directly.

4Canonical example

Astrology makes predictions and revises them. So why is it not science?

5Objections & replies

Objection. Without a boundary, pseudoscience cannot be distinguished from science.

Reply. Rejecting one sharp criterion does not mean abandoning evaluation. Replication, openness to correction, predictive risk, methodological transparency, causal identification, peer criticism, and track record can jointly discriminate without forming a single essence.

Objection. Falsifiability still works well enough for practical purposes.

Reply. It is a useful warning against immunity, but too permissive and too restrictive as a universal rule. Many poor theories make falsifiable predictions, while mature sciences often test probabilistic or auxiliary-laden claims that resist one-shot falsification.

6Don't confuse it with

Demarcation vs. truth

A claim can be scientific and false, or true for non-scientific reasons. Demarcation concerns method/status, not truth-value.

Science vs. expertise

An expert judgment may be rationally authoritative without itself being a scientific result; expertise is a social-epistemic relation.

7Common mistakes

  • Using “not falsifiable” as a synonym for meaningless, false, or irrational.
  • Treating the label “science” as a substitute for examining the quality of the actual evidence and method.

8In your work

Every “is this rigorous enough?” judgment is a demarcation call. Knowing the criterion failed keeps you from applying it as if it were a rule.

9Check yourself

A forecasting system makes precise falsifiable predictions but repeatedly patches its model after misses and publishes no independent validation. Has falsifiability settled its scientific status?

Show answer

No. It passes one condition while failing others that matter: progressive prediction, transparency, independence, and response to error. Demarcation requires a broader methodological assessment.
