An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby (1768)

The new riddle of induction

Nelson Goodman
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

Goodman’s “grue” problem shows that evidence alone does not determine which predicates or patterns are projectible into the future.

1The problem it solves

Hume asks why any past regularity should continue. Goodman sharpens the puzzle: even granting projection, the same observations support multiple incompatible generalizations depending on how we describe the pattern. The missing ingredient is not more data but a theory of which predicates are lawlike or natural.

2The idea

Goodman defines a predicate: something is grue if it is observed before time t and green, or observed after t and blue. Every emerald examined so far is both green and grue. So the same evidence supports “all emeralds are green” and “all emeralds are grue” equally — yet these predict opposite things about tomorrow.

The riddle is not about colour. It shows that evidence alone never selects a generalisation. Some prior judgment about which predicates are projectible — which categories are natural — is doing the work, and that judgment is not in the data.

3Origin & context

Nelson Goodman introduced the “new riddle of induction” in Fact, Fiction, and Forecast. An object is “grue” if observed before a future time and green, or unobserved before that time and blue. All observed emeralds can be both green and grue, yet the predicates predict different future colors.

4Canonical example

Two specifications fit the same series identically and diverge sharply out of sample. The data cannot tell you which variables were the natural ones.

5Objections & replies

Objection. 'Grue' is artificially gerrymandered while 'green' is natural; the puzzle disappears once we prefer natural kinds.

Reply. That is the intuitive reply, but it relocates the problem: what non-circularly makes one predicate more natural or projectible? Goodman’s point is precisely that syntax and fit to past data do not answer that question.

Objection. Scientific practice already has entrenched vocabulary and background theory, so no one seriously considers grue-like rivals.

Reply. Goodman agrees entrenchment matters, but then inductive validity depends partly on linguistic and theoretical history. The modern practical analogue is feature engineering: multiple equally fitting specifications can encode very different extrapolations.

6Don't confuse it with

Grue and underdetermination

Grue is a specific problem of projectible predicates and induction. Underdetermination is broader: total evidence may support multiple rival theories, even with ordinary predicates.

Overfitting

Overfitting is a statistical failure to generalize due to fitting noise or excessive flexibility. Grue can arise even with perfect in-sample fit and no noisy estimation; it concerns which pattern is legitimate to project.

7Common mistakes

  • Dismissing grue merely because the predicate sounds weird; that assumes the naturalness criterion the riddle asks you to justify.
  • Treating better in-sample fit as the solution when green and grue are constructed to fit the observed cases equally.

8In your work

Your choice of variables and functional form is doing more work than the estimation. Grue is the proof that it must be, and therefore the argument for disclosing it.

9Check yourself

Two transformations of the same dataset fit every historical observation exactly but imply opposite out-of-sample trends. What Goodman-style question should you ask?

Show answer

What makes one representation genuinely projectible rather than merely an equally fitting redescription? The answer must come from structure, mechanism, background theory, or a principled simplicity/naturalness constraint—not historical fit alone.
