An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby (1768)

Corroboration ≠ confirmation

Popper
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

For Popper, corroboration is a record of surviving severe tests—not confirmation, probability, or inductive support for future success.

1The problem it solves

Popper wants science without induction. If past success raised the probability that a universal theory will continue to succeed, induction would have returned. So he sharply restricts “corroborated” to a historical appraisal: the theory has faced risky tests and not yet failed. That licenses preference in inquiry, but not the claim that the theory is probably true.

2The idea

A theory that has survived severe testing is corroborated. Popper insists this does not make it probable, or supported, or more likely to hold next time. It means only that it has not been refuted yet.

3Origin & context

A central distinction in Karl Popper’s philosophy of science, especially The Logic of Scientific Discovery and Conjectures and Refutations. Popper introduced special terminology partly to resist the ordinary inductive connotations of “confirmation.”

4Canonical example

A thousand successful tests still do not establish the next case. The logic has not changed since the first test.

5Objections & replies

Objection. If corroboration gives no reason to expect future success, why prefer a well-tested theory to an untested one?

Reply. This is a persistent difficulty. Popper appeals to rational preference for the best-tested theory as a methodological rule, but critics argue that practical reliance looks like inductive justification returning through the back door.

Objection. Scientists plainly do treat repeated success as evidence, so Popper’s usage is too revisionary.

Reply. Yes. Bayesian and other confirmation theories deliberately formalize that ordinary practice. Popper’s distinction remains useful when reading him, and as a warning not to turn survival into certainty.

6Don't confuse it with

Corroborated vs. verified

Corroborated means not yet refuted under severe tests; verified suggests established true, which Popper rejects for universal empirical theories.

Corroboration vs. replication

Replication is repeating or independently reproducing a result. Replication can contribute to corroboration, but the concepts are not identical.

7Common mistakes

  • Writing that Popperian corroboration means a theory has become more probable.
  • Calling a theory highly corroborated merely because it fit many observations that it was designed after seeing.

8In your work

Guards against “the model has worked for ten years” as an argument. Track record is a fact about the past, not a warrant about the future.

9Check yourself

A theory has survived ten severe, pre-specified tests. What can a strict Popperian say—and what can they not say?

Show answer

They can say it is highly corroborated relative to rivals and has survived serious criticism. They cannot infer from that alone that the theory is probably true or that the eleventh test is likely to succeed.
