Epistemic closure says that if you know p, and know that p entails q, then—after competent deduction—you can know q.
1The problem it solves
Closure captures the intuition that knowledge is preserved by known entailment. It also powers the skeptical argument: if having hands entails not being a handless brain in a vat, then knowing you have hands appears to require knowing you are not such a brain.
2The idea
If you know p, and you know that p entails q, then you know q. Stated plainly it sounds almost too obvious to name.
It is also the engine of the sceptical argument. You know you have hands; having hands entails not being a handless brain in a vat; so you know you are not one. Since the sceptic denies the conclusion, either closure or the first premise must go — and both are painful to give up.
3Origin & context
Closure is a standard principle rather than a doctrine tied to one founder. Fred Dretske and Robert Nozick famously deny versions of it to protect ordinary knowledge from skepticism. Much of the architecture of contemporary skepticism is a fight over whether that cost is acceptable.
4Canonical example
You know you had exactly two drinks. That entails fewer than three. So you know you had fewer than three. Closure at work, and clearly correct.
5Objections & replies
Objection. Denying closure creates 'abominable conjunctions': I know I have hands but do not know I am not a handless BIV.
Reply. This is the strongest intuitive cost for relevant-alternatives and sensitivity views. Their reply is that knowledge depends on how a proposition is tracked or which alternatives are relevant, and those properties need not transmit through entailment. Many epistemologists still prefer to preserve closure.
Objection. Closure seems too strong if the subject never draws the inference or does not understand the entailment.
Reply. Standard formulations require that the subject know the entailment and competently deduce q. Closure is not automatic omniscience: knowledge is closed under known competent deduction, not under every consequence hidden in one’s beliefs.
6Don't confuse it with
Logical closure and epistemic closure
A set of propositions can be logically closed under consequence even though no human knows all those consequences. Epistemic closure adds conditions about the knower and inference.
Closure and certainty
Closure says knowledge can transmit through entailment; it does not say the original premise must be certain.
7Common mistakes
- Assuming closure means people know every logical consequence of everything they know.
- Using closure without checking whether the subject actually knows the entailment connecting p to q.
8In your work
A precise test for whether a finding really carries the implication being claimed for it. Trace the entailment: does the knowledge actually transmit, or does something leak on the way?
9Check yourself
You know a report contains exactly two material errors, and you know “exactly two” entails “fewer than three.” What does closure license?
Show answer
If you competently make the inference, it licenses knowledge that the report contains fewer than three material errors. The principle preserves knowledge through the known entailment.
