Hinge epistemology

Some commitments are not conclusions supported by evidence; they are the background certainties that make giving and assessing evidence possible.

1The problem it solves

Scepticism and the regress problem both assume every meaningful commitment is up for ordinary evidential assessment. Hinge epistemology challenges that assumption. Inquiry needs a relatively fixed background—such as the existence of an external world or the general reliability of memory—against which particular doubts can have sense.

2The idea

Refuse the framing rather than pick a horn. Wittgenstein's late notebooks argue that some propositions are neither justified nor unjustified. They are the hinges on which the door of inquiry turns — the things that must stay fixed for doubting and checking to be possible at all.

Asking what justifies a hinge is a kind of grammatical mistake, like asking what justifies your headache. The hinge is not a very well-supported claim; it is not in the support business.

Duncan Pritchard has developed this into a systematic response to scepticism, and it applies to secular bedrock commitments as much as to religious ones.

3Origin & context

The source is Wittgenstein’s late notes published as On Certainty, written in dialogue with G.E. Moore. Contemporary hinge epistemology is strongly associated with Duncan Pritchard. The move is not to give hinges extraordinarily strong evidence, but to place them outside ordinary evidential support.

4Canonical example

“The world existed before I was born.” You cannot produce evidence for it without already relying on it.

5Objections & replies

Objection. How do you distinguish a genuine hinge from a prejudice someone simply refuses to examine?

Reply. This is the central danger. Defenders appeal to the role a commitment plays: a hinge is constitutive of a practice of inquiry and shared across many particular judgments, not merely a cherished proposition insulated for convenience. Critics question whether that functional test is sharp enough.

Objection. If hinges are neither justified nor unjustified, trusting them looks epistemically arbitrary.

Reply. The reply is that asking for evidence for the framework within which evidence has force mislocates the demand. The entitlement is arational or non-evidential rather than irrational. The cost is accepting that not every rational commitment is supported by reasons in the same way.

6Don't confuse it with

Foundationalism

Foundationalism gives basic beliefs a special kind of justification. Hinge views often say hinges are not justified at all; they are conditions of the justificatory game.

Fideism

A hinge is not automatically a faith commitment. The category is functional and can include mundane secular certainties. Fideism specifically protects faith from ordinary evidential demands.

7Common mistakes

  • Using 'hinge' as a label for any belief you do not want to defend.
  • Treating hinges as propositions with overwhelming evidence rather than as background commitments whose role is prior to ordinary evidence.

8In your work

Explains why certain disagreements cannot be settled by evidence: the parties are running different hinges, not weighing the same evidence differently. Recognising that saves you from an unwinnable argument.

9Check yourself

Someone says, “Prove that the external world existed five minutes ago before you use any memory as evidence.” What would a hinge epistemologist say is wrong with the demand?

Show answer

The demand asks memory to be validated from a standpoint that already presupposes some framework for evidence and temporal continuity. The relevant commitment functions as a hinge of the practice, not as one more hypothesis inside it.
