The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (1434)

Rationalism vs Empiricism

Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza vs Locke, Berkeley, Hume
Jan van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait, 1434

Rationalism gives reason an independent route to substantive knowledge; empiricism insists that substantive knowledge ultimately earns its content from experience.

1The problem it solves

The dispute asks where intellectual content comes from and therefore what theory can legitimately do before data arrive. It is the background fault line beneath arguments about innate concepts, mathematics, causation, economic models, and whether conceptual necessity can tell us anything about the world.

2The idea

The organising dispute of early modern philosophy. Rationalists hold that reason alone can deliver substantive knowledge of the world. Empiricists hold that all such knowledge ultimately traces back to experience, and that reason only rearranges what experience supplies.

The argument was never settled; it was absorbed. Every methodological fight about whether to start from theory or from data is a descendant of it.

3Origin & context

The canonical early-modern contrast places Descartes, Leibniz, and Spinoza on the rationalist side and Locke, Berkeley, and Hume on the empiricist side. Kant’s synthetic a priori attempted a transformation rather than a simple victory for either camp.

4Canonical example

Is “every event has a cause” known by thinking it through, or generalised from a very large number of observations?

5Objections & replies

Objection. Pure reason cannot guarantee that the world conforms to our concepts.

Reply. This is the empiricist pressure: logical necessity can preserve truth but cannot by itself supply empirical premises. Rationalists answer by defending innate structure, necessary truths, or conditions of possible experience.

Objection. Experience alone cannot organize itself; observation is already concept-laden.

Reply. This is the rationalist/Kantian counterpressure. Even deciding what counts as an observation requires conceptual structure, so the strongest empiricism still owes an account of that structure.

6Don't confuse it with

Rationalism vs. being rational

Rationalism is a thesis about sources of knowledge, not simply praise for careful reasoning.

Empiricism vs. experimentalism

Empiricism is broader: it says experience is the ultimate source of substantive knowledge, even when no controlled experiment is possible.

7Common mistakes

  • Treating theory-first and data-first workflows as methodologically neutral rather than as carrying different epistemic commitments.
  • Assuming the modern sciences simply “settled” the historical dispute; they combine both inheritances.

8In your work

The unstated fault line between theory-first and data-first economics. Most methodological arguments in that field are this argument wearing modern clothes.

9Check yourself

An economist says a theorem reveals a substantive feature of any possible market even before observing one. Which side bears the burden, and what must be shown?

Show answer

That is a rationalist-style claim. The burden is to show that the theorem’s premises are not merely chosen definitions or empirical assumptions in disguise, and that the result legitimately applies to the world.
