Reason and the a priori

Kant · Ayer · Kripke · BonJour
Jan van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait, 1434

A priori justification is justification available independently of particular sensory experience, paradigmatically through reason, concepts, or understanding.

1The problem it solves

Some truths seem knowable without checking the world: logical entailments, elementary mathematics, and conceptual constraints. The a priori matters because it determines whether experience is the source of all substantive knowledge and what status to assign to mathematics, logic, and theoretical reasoning.

2The idea

Justification that does not depend on experience at all. Mathematics, logic, and conceptual truths are the paradigm cases: you do not survey bachelors to learn that they are unmarried.

Three questions follow. Does a priori knowledge exist, or is all knowledge ultimately empirical? If it exists, what produces it — intellectual insight, grasp of necessity, or a reliable cognitive process? And how far does it extend?

3Origin & context

The rationalist–empiricist dispute structures early modern philosophy; Kant transformed it by arguing for synthetic a priori knowledge. Twentieth-century debates include Ayer’s conventionalism and later challenges from Quine and Kripke, whose work separates apriority from necessity.

4Canonical example

“If a ball is green all over, it does not have black spots.” No observation is required, and none would help.

5Objections & replies

Objection. How can thought alone tell us anything substantive about reality rather than merely unpack definitions?

Reply. Rationalists and Kantians argue that some principles are conditions of intelligibility or are grasped by rational insight, not empirical generalization. Empiricists respond that apparent insight may encode linguistic conventions or deeply learned regularities.

Objection. Quine’s attack on the analytic/synthetic distinction undermines a clean boundary between a priori and empirical knowledge.

Reply. The collapse is not universally accepted. Contemporary defenders can define apriority epistemically—justification not depending on specific experiences—without requiring an absolute analytic/synthetic metaphysical divide.

6Don't confuse it with

A priori and necessary

Apriority is about how a proposition is justified; necessity is about whether it could have been false. Kripke showed the categories can come apart.

A priori and innate

A belief need not be present from birth to be a priori. You can learn the concepts and later justify a proposition without empirical evidence for that proposition.

7Common mistakes

  • Calling any theoretical assumption 'a priori' merely because it was chosen before looking at the current dataset.
  • Assuming a priori means unrevisable; many philosophers allow fallible or defeasible a priori justification.

8In your work

Decides what you think a formal model actually is: a discovery about the world, or an elaborate restatement of its own assumptions.

9Check yourself

You know that no object can be both entirely green and entirely black at the same place and time without inspecting every object. What feature makes the justification a priori?

Show answer

The warrant comes from conceptual or rational relations, not an inductive survey of colored objects. Experience may be needed to acquire the concepts, but not to justify this particular relation.
