The no-miracles argument

Hilary Putnam
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

The no-miracles argument says the best explanation of sustained novel predictive success is that successful scientific theories are at least approximately true.

1The problem it solves

Realists argue that if a theory’s hidden structure bore no relation to reality, repeated precise success—especially on phenomena not used to construct it—would be an astonishing coincidence. Approximate truth is offered as the explanation that makes scientific success unsurprising.

2The idea

The predictive success of science would be a miracle if its theories were not at least approximately true. Realism is offered as the only non-miraculous explanation of that success.

3Origin & context

Often associated with Hilary Putnam’s formulation that realism is the only philosophy that does not make the success of science a miracle, though related arguments predate him. It is an abductive argument: realism is presented as the best explanation of success, not a deductive proof.

4Objections & replies

Objection. Pessimistic meta-induction: past false theories were also successful, so success cannot imply approximate truth.

Reply. Selective realists respond that the success-producing structure often survives theory change. The debate then moves to whether those preserved elements can be identified without hindsight.

Objection. Selection effects explain success: unsuccessful theories disappear, so of course surviving theories look impressive.

Reply. Realists answer that selection alone does not explain why a theory makes genuinely novel, quantitatively precise predictions. Anti-realists dispute how much explanatory work approximate truth adds beyond empirical adaptation.

5Don't confuse it with

No-miracles argument vs. proof by success

It is inference to the best explanation, not the fallacy “it works, therefore every part is true.”

Approximate truth vs. exact truth

Realists can expect idealizations and false details while claiming that key structure or mechanisms are sufficiently right to explain success.

6Common mistakes

  • Using in-sample fit as the sort of surprising success the argument needs.
  • Ignoring the possibility that several incompatible models achieve the same success, weakening the abductive inference.

7In your work

The strongest case for taking a model's internals seriously rather than treating it as a black box that happens to work.

Which kind of empirical success gives the no-miracles argument its strongest force?

Show answer

Novel, risky, precise success on phenomena not used to build or tune the theory—especially when rival theories did not predict the same outcome.
