Epistemic vices are stable habits or character traits—dogmatism, closed-mindedness, intellectual arrogance, negligence—that systematically obstruct knowledge and understanding.
1The problem it solves
Some failures are not one-off reasoning errors. An organization can repeatedly miss evidence because its members are incurious, defensive, or unwilling to admit uncertainty even when each individual inference is technically competent. Vice epistemology diagnoses the posture that generates recurring epistemic failure.
2The idea
Dispositions that systematically obstruct knowledge: dogmatism, closed-mindedness, gullibility, wishful thinking, intellectual cowardice, arrogance.
3Origin & context
Quassim Cassam is a prominent contemporary advocate of analyzing intellectual vice, including through real intelligence and policy failures. The approach complements cognitive-bias research by focusing on responsible habits and character rather than automatic psychological mechanisms alone.
4Canonical example
Cassam analyses real intelligence and policy failures as vice rather than error — the individual steps were competent and the posture was wrong.
5Objections & replies
Objection. Calling someone vicious moralizes disagreement and invites character attacks instead of argument.
Reply. That danger is real. Vice should be inferred from stable epistemic behavior—repeated evasion of counterevidence, strategic ignorance, refusal to correct—not from holding an unpopular or mistaken belief. Diagnose patterns, not opponents’ souls.
Objection. Many apparent vices are adaptive responses to incentives or institutions rather than personal defects.
Reply. Then the unit of diagnosis should expand. Organizations can cultivate epistemic vice through promotion systems, secrecy, or punishment of dissent. Character language should not obscure structural causes.
6Don't confuse it with
Epistemic vice and cognitive bias
Bias often denotes an automatic or general cognitive tendency. Vice implies a more stable disposition connected to agency and sometimes responsibility.
Dogmatism and conviction
Strong conviction is compatible with responsiveness to defeaters. Dogmatism is the disposition to insulate belief from appropriate revision.
7Common mistakes
- Using vice labels as ad hominem shortcuts after losing patience with an argument.
- Ignoring institutional incentives that repeatedly reward closed-minded behavior and then blaming only individual character.
8In your work
Names the failure mode nobody can find in a process review, because it is not in any single step.
9Check yourself
A team repeatedly suppresses inconvenient sensitivity checks because leadership punishes uncertainty. Is the right diagnosis only “individual closed-mindedness”?
Show answer
No. The behavior is epistemically vicious, but the causal structure is institutional. A good diagnosis targets both the repeated vice-like practice and the incentives that produce and reward it.
