Deflationary theory

William Anders, Apollo 8, Earthrise, 24 December 1968

Deflationism says “is true” does not name a deep property; saying “it is true that p” is, in the basic cases, just another way of asserting p.

1The problem it solves

Traditional theories ask for the nature of truth—correspondence, coherence, or practical success. Deflationists suspect the question is overinflated. The truth predicate performs logical and linguistic jobs, especially generalization, without requiring a substantial metaphysical property called Truth.

2The idea

“It is true that p” says nothing beyond p itself. Truth is a logical convenience — it lets us generalise and endorse — not a substantive property in need of analysis.

3Origin & context

The family includes Ramsey’s redundancy idea, Quine’s disquotational use of truth, and Horwich’s minimalist theory. The key schema is that “p is true” is equivalent to p. The predicate becomes useful when we cannot conveniently assert every proposition individually, as in “everything the witness said is true.”

4Canonical example

“It's true that it's raining” adds nothing at all to “it's raining”.

5Objections & replies

Objection. If truth is thin, how can truth be the aim of inquiry or explain why true belief is valuable?

Reply. Deflationists separate the expressive role of the truth predicate from substantive epistemic norms. Inquiry can aim at believing p when p, without truth needing to be a heavyweight property. Critics argue the thin account struggles to explain truth’s normative role.

Objection. Correspondence intuitions seem unavoidable: 'snow is white' is true because snow is white.

Reply. The deflationist embraces the biconditional but denies it reveals a common relation requiring further analysis. The right explanation stops with each instance rather than positing an additional correspondence entity or property.

6Don't confuse it with

Deflationism and relativism

Deflationism does not say truth varies by person or framework. It says the truth predicate is metaphysically thin.

Deflationism and skepticism

A thin theory of truth says little about whether we can know which propositions are true. It is not a skeptical thesis.

7Common mistakes

  • Concluding that deflationism says truth is unimportant; it says the property is theoretically thin, not that true belief lacks importance.
  • Thinking 'true' is literally dispensable in every sentence; generalizations and semantic ascent give the predicate real expressive work.

8In your work

A fast way to dissolve arguments about whether something is “really” true: restate both positions without the word and see whether the dispute survives.

9Check yourself

Why is “everything in this report is true” useful if “p is true” adds nothing to p in each individual case?

Show answer

Because the truth predicate lets you endorse many propositions at once without listing or even being able to formulate each one. Deflationism calls that logical-expressive role real while denying a deep metaphysical property is needed.
