The problem of the criterion

Roderick Chisholm · Sextus Empiricus
Giovanni Battista Piranesi, The Drawbridge, plate VII of the Imaginary Prisons (Carceri d'invenzione), 1761

To know which beliefs are good you need a criterion; to know the criterion is good you need trusted cases—so each seems to require the other first.

1The problem it solves

Validation procedures often hide a prior decision about what counts as a successful case. The problem of the criterion exposes that circularity. Particularism begins with cases treated as known and infers standards from them; methodism begins with a standard and lets it classify cases. Neither starting point can be certified without borrowing from the other side.

2The idea

A sibling of the trilemma, and in some ways sharper. To identify which of your beliefs count as knowledge, you need a criterion. To validate a criterion, you need some cases you already know to be knowledge. Each requires the other first.

Chisholm named the two escapes. Particularism starts from confident particular cases and derives the criterion from them. Methodism starts from a criterion and lets it decide the cases. Neither can justify its own starting point.

3Origin & context

Roderick Chisholm gave the modern formulation, drawing on an ancient skeptical structure already visible in Sextus Empiricus. It is a sibling of the regress problem but targets the relation between instances of knowledge and criteria for knowledge rather than the chain of reasons itself.

4Canonical example

How do you know the thermometer is accurate? Compare it against a known temperature. How do you know that temperature? You measured it.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Real calibration uses independent gold standards, so the circle can be broken.

Reply. Only if the gold standard is genuinely independent and already warranted. The philosophical question simply moves to how that standard earned its status. In practice, external redundancy can reduce circularity without eliminating the logical structure.

Objection. The problem is too abstract; ordinary inquiry works without solving it.

Reply. Correct—and that is informative. Inquiry proceeds by provisional fixed points. The practical lesson is to identify which cases or methods are being held fixed rather than pretending the system validates itself from nowhere.

6Don't confuse it with

Problem of the criterion vs. Münchhausen trilemma

The trilemma concerns how reasons terminate. The criterion problem concerns mutual dependence between standards and the cases used to validate those standards.

Particularism vs. philosophical particularism in ethics

Here particularism means starting epistemology from trusted cases, not the separate moral-theory view that principles are unnecessary.

7Common mistakes

  • Calling a validation “independent” when the benchmark was built from the same model or data.
  • Hiding the initial fixed points rather than stating which observations, instruments, or cases are taken as provisionally trustworthy.

8In your work

Every validation exercise has this shape. Naming it early stops you spending a month inside a circular audit, and forces the honest move: declare which cases you are treating as fixed.

9Check yourself

You validate a risk score against labels produced by the same expert process the score was trained to imitate. What problem should immediately occur to you?

Show answer

The problem of the criterion: the benchmark and the method may be validating one another. You need an independently warranted anchor or an explicit admission that one side is being treated as the fixed point.
