Bullshit vs lying

Harry Frankfurt, On Bullshit
Rembrandt van Rijn, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, 1633

Bullshit is speech produced with indifference to whether it is true; unlike lying, its defining vice is lack of concern for truth rather than deliberate falsity.

1The problem it solves

Epistemic environments can be damaged not only by false statements but by communication detached from truth-testing altogether. A liar tracks truth closely enough to invert it; the bullshitter optimizes for impression, persuasion, status, or fluency without caring whether the content corresponds to reality.

2The idea

A liar knows the truth and conceals it — and therefore still respects it enough to track it. A bullshitter is indifferent to whether what he says is true. Frankfurt argues the second is the greater enemy of the epistemic commons.

3Origin & context

Harry Frankfurt’s essay On Bullshit gives the canonical distinction. The idea belongs in virtue epistemology because the central defect is an orientation toward truth, not a logical property of a sentence. A bullshit statement can accidentally be true.

4Canonical example

Text produced to sound authoritative, with no mechanism anywhere in its production for checking whether it is accurate.

5Objections & replies

Objection. The distinction depends on hidden intention, which listeners often cannot know.

Reply. Correct. 'Bullshit' is a diagnosis of communicative stance, so it should not be inferred merely from falsity. Observable markers include confident improvisation without verification, indifference to correction, and content that shifts to preserve impression rather than accuracy.

Objection. A liar can be more harmful than an indifferent speaker, so why call bullshit epistemically worse?

Reply. Frankfurt’s point is structural, not a universal harm ranking: the liar still recognizes truth as the target to be manipulated, while bullshit erodes the norm that truth is relevant at all. Context determines which causes more damage.

6Don't confuse it with

Bullshit and lying

A liar believes the statement false and intends deception. Bullshit can be true or false; the speaker’s relationship to truth is indifferent.

Bullshit and error

An honest error comes from a truth-directed attempt that failed. Bullshit lacks the truth-directed discipline in the first place.

7Common mistakes

  • Calling every false or sloppy claim bullshit without evidence of indifference to truth.
  • Focusing only on factual correction when the deeper problem is a process that produces confident content without verification.

8In your work

The precise word for a large share of professional communication, and a reason indifference to truth deserves harsher treatment than honest error.

9Check yourself

A presenter confidently invents a statistic, and later says “great, then use the correct number” with no concern that the original was fabricated. Lie, error, or bullshit?

Show answer

Paradigmatically bullshit: the key feature is indifference to whether the number was true, not necessarily an intention to make the audience believe something the presenter knew was false.
