The bias blind spot

The bias blind spot is the tendency to see cognitive biases more readily in other people than in oneself, even after learning about those biases.

1The problem it solves

Bias education can perversely increase confidence: once you can name errors, you become better at diagnosing opponents while assuming your own introspection reveals unbiased motives. The blind spot is therefore a meta-bias—a failure in how we apply the concept of bias itself.

2The idea

People readily recognise bias in others and reliably fail to see it in themselves — including immediately after being taught the list of biases.

3Origin & context

Emily Pronin and collaborators developed the bias-blind-spot literature. One proposed mechanism is the introspection illusion: we inspect our conscious reasons and do not “see” a bias, while judging others from observable behavior where bias patterns are easier to detect.

4Canonical example

Learning this material mostly improves your detection of other people's errors. That is the finding, and it applies to you reading it now.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Maybe people really are better at detecting others’ biases because third-person distance is informative.

Reply. Sometimes. The blind spot is not that every self-assessment is wrong, but that people systematically grant their own introspection evidential privileges they do not grant others. Objective records and symmetric procedures are needed to test the asymmetry.

Objection. Calling the blind spot itself a universal bias risks the same overgeneralization criticized in bias research.

Reply. The right use is probabilistic and procedural, not accusatory. Treat the finding as a reason to build self-audit mechanisms—prediction logs, preregistration, red teams—rather than as proof that any particular judgment is biased.

6Don't confuse it with

Bias blind spot and overconfidence

Overconfidence concerns miscalibrated certainty or self-assessment. The blind spot specifically concerns asymmetry in detecting bias in self versus others.

Introspection and debiasing

Knowing your conscious reasons does not reveal all causal influences on reasoning. Introspection can be useful without being a reliable bias detector.

7Common mistakes

  • Finishing a bias course and mainly using the vocabulary to classify coworkers.
  • Treating sincerity—'I genuinely followed the evidence'—as strong evidence that motivation or selection effects were absent.

8In your work

Why awareness training underperforms and process changes work. Design the checks into the workflow, not into the good intentions.

9Check yourself

You can list three biases in a colleague’s memo but none in your own, because “I know why I reached my conclusion.” What is the correct next move?

Show answer

Do not trust the asymmetry. Apply an externalized audit to your own work: pre-specified alternatives, a decision log, independent replication, or a red team. The blind spot is exactly why introspective innocence is weak evidence.
