The argumentative theory of reason

Hugo Mercier & Dan Sperber
Francisco Goya, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, plate 43 of Los Caprichos, 1799

The argumentative theory proposes that human reasoning is specialized for producing and evaluating arguments in social exchange, not primarily for solitary truth-maximization.

1The problem it solves

It explains an otherwise puzzling pattern: people often exhibit myside bias when reasoning alone yet improve dramatically when genuine disagreement forces them to evaluate opposing reasons. On this view, some “biases” are side effects of a system designed for interactive argument rather than private optimization.

2The idea

Reason did not evolve to help a solitary thinker find truth. It evolved to produce arguments that persuade others and to evaluate the arguments others produce. On that account, confirmation bias is not a bug — it is the design working as intended.

3Origin & context

Developed by Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber, especially in work culminating in The Enigma of Reason. The theory challenges the picture of reason as an individual-purpose general optimizer and emphasizes its social, communicative function.

4Canonical example

People reason poorly alone and markedly better in groups where real disagreement is present.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Evolutionary function is difficult to establish, and current performance does not prove why reason evolved.

Reply. Correct. The theory is strongest as an explanatory research program supported by comparative patterns, not as a directly observed evolutionary fact. Competing accounts can explain some of the same data.

Objection. If reason evolved for argument, that seems to make truth secondary or irrelevant.

Reply. Evaluation of others’ arguments still rewards detecting bad reasons, and social exchange can improve accuracy. The claim is about functional design and division of labor, not that truth has no role.

6Don't confuse it with

Argumentative theory vs. motivated reasoning

Motivated reasoning explains direction toward desired conclusions. The argumentative theory gives a broader functional account of why reason may be asymmetric between producing and evaluating arguments.

Persuasion vs. rhetoric alone

The theory concerns reasons and their evaluation, not merely emotional manipulation or stylistic persuasion.

7Common mistakes

  • Using the theory as an excuse that individual reasoning cannot improve.
  • Concluding that group discussion always helps; homogeneous or conformist groups can amplify rather than correct error.

8In your work

A structural prescription: stop trying to debias individuals and build adversarial review instead. The design should supply the disagreement that reasoning needs to work.

9Check yourself

What institutional design follows most directly if the argumentative theory is broadly right?

Show answer

Build genuine adversarial exchange: independent analyses, red teams, and incentives to challenge rather than merely asking each individual to “debias” alone.
