Simpson's paradox

Edward Simpson · Udny Yule
Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

Simpson’s paradox occurs when an association reverses after aggregation or stratification because group composition carries information about the causal or sampling structure.

1The problem it solves

The paradox demonstrates that “the data” do not dictate one aggregation level. A treatment can outperform in every subgroup yet look worse overall if treatment groups contain different mixes of high- and low-risk cases. Both arithmetic summaries can be correct; deciding which is relevant requires the causal question.

2The idea

A trend present in every subgroup can reverse when the subgroups are combined. Both the aggregated and disaggregated numbers are correct; they answer different questions.

3Origin & context

Named after Edward Simpson, with related earlier work by Udny Yule. It is now a standard example in statistics and causal inference because graphical causal structure determines whether to adjust for the grouping variable or leave it aggregated.

4Canonical example

A treatment better for men and better for women, yet worse for people overall.

5Objections & replies

Objection. The disaggregated result is always the true one because it is more detailed.

Reply. No. If the grouping variable is a mediator or collider, stratifying can answer the wrong question or introduce bias. More granular is not automatically more causal.

Objection. The aggregated result is the real population effect because policy operates on the population.

Reply. Sometimes, but composition can confound the comparison. The relevant estimand—overall policy effect, within-group effect, standardized effect—must be chosen before deciding which aggregation answers it.

6Don't confuse it with

Simpson’s paradox vs. confounding

Confounding is one causal structure that can produce reversal, but Simpson’s paradox is the statistical reversal pattern itself.

Aggregation bias vs. arithmetic error

No arithmetic mistake is required. The paradox arises precisely because both summaries can be numerically correct while conditioning choices differ.

7Common mistakes

  • Choosing the aggregation level after seeing which version supports the preferred conclusion.
  • Assuming subgroup adjustment is always safer without drawing the causal role of the grouping variable.

8In your work

The aggregation level is a substantive choice, not a presentational one. Whoever picks it picks the answer — so it belongs in the methodology, not the formatting.

9Check yourself

A treatment is better for men and better for women but worse overall. What must you inspect before deciding which conclusion matters?

Show answer

The group composition and causal role of sex in assignment/outcome, plus the estimand of interest. The reversal itself does not tell you whether to aggregate or stratify.
