Properly basic beliefs

Plantinga · Chisholm
Hanabusa Itchō, Blind Monks Examining an Elephant, Edo period

A properly basic belief is rationally held without inferential support because it arises in the right epistemic circumstances or cognitive basis.

1The problem it solves

The regress problem forces foundationalists to explain why stopping at some beliefs is not arbitrary. “Properly basic” names the status they need: a belief can be justified or warranted directly, without another belief serving as premise, while still being rationally assessable and defeasible.

2The idea

Beliefs that are rational without being derived from other beliefs. Everyone's framework contains some; the disagreement is entirely about which ones qualify and on what criterion.

3Origin & context

The language is associated especially with Alvin Plantinga, building on broader foundationalist work including Roderick Chisholm. Plantinga uses it to broaden the class of rational basic beliefs beyond the classical list of self-evident or incorrigible propositions.

4Canonical example

“I had breakfast this morning.” “Other people have minds.” “The world is more than five minutes old.”

5Objections & replies

Objection. If basic beliefs need no reasons, the category simply hides dogmatism.

Reply. The foundationalist distinguishes non-inferential grounds from no grounds at all. Perceptual experience, memory, or an appropriate cognitive disposition can constitute the basis even when the subject has no premise from which the belief is inferred.

Objection. There is no neutral criterion for the right circumstances, so different traditions can declare incompatible beliefs basic.

Reply. That is the basicality challenge. Externalist accounts appeal to reliable/proper functioning and environment; internalists appeal to experience or seemings. No account avoids all controversy, which is why the category is a live theory rather than a shortcut.

6Don't confuse it with

Basic and self-evident

Self-evident propositions are one possible classical category of basic belief, but contemporary foundationalism allows perceptual or memory beliefs that are neither self-evident nor certain.

Basic and undefeatable

A basic belief can acquire a defeater. Its status concerns the source of prima facie justification, not permanent immunity to evidence.

7Common mistakes

  • Using 'properly basic' to mean 'deeply held' or 'personally important.'
  • Thinking non-inferential means causeless or groundless; the relevant basis may be an experience or cognitive faculty rather than another proposition.

8In your work

Write your own list once. It is a genuinely uncomfortable exercise and it tells you more about your framework than any amount of reading.

9Check yourself

You remember eating breakfast and form “I ate breakfast” without constructing an argument. What would make that belief properly basic rather than arbitrary?

Show answer

An appropriate functioning memory state provides the non-inferential basis, and no defeating evidence is present. The belief is not premise-free because of preference; it is grounded in a source that supplies prima facie warrant directly.
