The preface paradox

D.C. Makinson
Claude Monet, Impression, Sunrise, 1872

The preface paradox shows that rational confidence in each claim can coexist with rational confidence that at least one claim in the total body is wrong.

1The problem it solves

Authors reasonably believe each sentence they assert, yet experience tells them that long works almost certainly contain an error. The two attitudes are individually rational but jointly inconsistent under simple closure rules. The paradox exposes the tension between local justification and global fallibility.

2The idea

An author believes each individual claim in her book, and also believes — from long experience — that the book contains at least one error. Both attitudes are rational, and together they are inconsistent.

3Origin & context

Formulated by D.C. Makinson in the twentieth century. It became a companion to the lottery paradox in debates over rational belief, closure, acceptance rules, and the relation between graded credence and categorical belief.

4Canonical example

The standard preface: “any remaining errors are my own.” It is a formal contradiction and nobody objects.

5Objections & replies

Objection. The author should simply withhold belief from one unspecified sentence.

Reply. Which one? The point is that there may be no particular claim with weaker evidence. Arbitrarily downgrading one sentence would be less rational locally than maintaining confidence while acknowledging global fallibility.

Objection. The inconsistency proves our ordinary concept of belief is irrational.

Reply. Or it shows that rational belief is not closed under unrestricted conjunction. Many theories respond by distinguishing acceptance for practical purposes from full belief or by modeling confidence probabilistically.

6Don't confuse it with

Preface paradox vs. hypocrisy

The author is not saying a particular claim is false while asserting it. The meta-belief concerns the collection as a whole.

Preface vs. lottery paradox

Preface relies on empirical knowledge about one’s error rate; lottery relies on the known structure that one member must fail.

7Common mistakes

  • Treating acknowledgment of fallibility as a reason to retract every individual conclusion.
  • Demanding that a large report be either fully endorsed or globally disowned rather than assigning local and global confidence separately.

8In your work

Licenses an honest and useful posture: “I stand behind every number in here, and I expect at least one is wrong.” Saying both is not incoherence.

9Check yourself

Can “I stand behind every estimate in this report” and “I expect at least one estimate is wrong” both be rational?

Show answer

Yes, and that is the paradox. Each estimate may be individually well supported while accumulated fallibility makes the global error claim highly credible.
