Confounding and DAGs

Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

A confounder is a common cause of treatment and outcome that can create or distort association; causal adjustment aims to block that backdoor path without opening new ones.

1The problem it solves

Regression does not know which variables are confounders. The decision requires a causal model. DAGs make assumed paths explicit so analysts can distinguish variables that should be adjusted for from mediators, colliders, and irrelevant predictors. “Control for everything” is not conservative—it can create bias.

2The idea

A common cause of both treatment and outcome produces association without causation. Directed acyclic graphs make the assumed causal structure explicit so the required adjustments can be derived rather than guessed.

3Origin & context

Confounding is old in epidemiology and statistics; modern graphical criteria are associated with Judea Pearl, Sander Greenland, James Robins, and related causal-inference work. The backdoor criterion formalizes when conditioning suffices under a stated DAG.

4Canonical example

Wealth causes both private schooling and later earnings, so the raw association between the two overstates the effect of schooling.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Including more controls can only make comparisons fairer.

Reply. False. Conditioning on colliders can induce association, and controlling mediators can remove part of the causal effect you intend to estimate. Control selection must follow the estimand and causal graph.

Objection. DAGs are subjective drawings, so they add no information.

Reply. They do not create causal knowledge, but they expose assumptions that regression otherwise hides. Competing DAGs can be compared, challenged, and subjected to sensitivity analysis; implicit assumptions are not less subjective because they are invisible.

6Don't confuse it with

Confounder vs. mediator

A confounder is a common cause preceding treatment and outcome; a mediator lies on the causal pathway from treatment to outcome.

Confounder vs. collider

A confounder points into both variables; a collider receives arrows from two causes. Conditioning often helps with the former and harms with the latter.

7Common mistakes

  • Selecting controls by statistical significance instead of causal role.
  • Conditioning on post-treatment variables without specifying whether the estimand is total or direct effect.

8In your work

Drawing the DAG forces you to state causal assumptions you were making implicitly anyway. The discomfort of writing them down is the point.

9Check yourself

Wealth affects both private-school attendance and adult earnings. What role does wealth play in the raw schooling–earnings association?

Show answer

A confounder/common cause. Failing to address the backdoor path through wealth can make the schooling association look more causal than it is.
