Confirmation bias

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek, generate, interpret, and stop on evidence in ways that preferentially protect an existing hypothesis.

1The problem it solves

The danger is not merely noticing supportive evidence. Rational inquiry should seek evidence that discriminates among hypotheses, and often the most informative test is one designed to fail your favored view. Confirmation bias distorts the search process before the final interpretation even begins.

2The idea

The tendency to seek, notice, and weight evidence that supports what you already believe, and to work less hard at finding what would count against it.

Wason's 2-4-6 task is the classic demonstration. Participants are given a triple that fits a hidden rule and asked to discover the rule by proposing further triples. Almost everyone proposes triples they expect to fit. Almost nobody proposes one they expect to fail — which is the only kind of test that could disconfirm.

3Origin & context

Peter Wason’s selection and 2-4-6 tasks are classic experimental demonstrations; Raymond Nickerson’s review helped consolidate the broad concept. The modern literature distinguishes confirmation bias from motivated reasoning and myside bias because they can have different causes and remedies.

4Canonical example

You run the specification you expect to work. When it works, you stop. The decision to stop is where the bias lives.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Looking for confirming instances is sometimes efficient; science cannot test every alternative all the time.

Reply. Correct. The bias is not 'ever seeking confirmation' but asymmetric search or stopping when disconfirming tests would have higher information value. Good inquiry balances cost with diagnosticity.

Objection. Many famous cognitive-bias effects are fragile or context-dependent, so the label can become a just-so story.

Reply. That is why structural countermeasures are preferable to amateur diagnosis: pre-specify tests, require falsifying conditions, use blinded analysis, and log stopping rules. The intervention can be useful even when motive attribution is uncertain.

6Don't confuse it with

Confirmation bias and motivated reasoning

Confirmation bias can arise from generic search heuristics without a desired conclusion. Motivated reasoning specifically involves incentives or identity shaping which conclusion the mind works to defend.

Confirmation and corroboration

Evidence that supports a hypothesis after a severe test is epistemically valuable. The bias concerns asymmetric evidence search and interpretation, not the mere existence of supporting evidence.

7Common mistakes

  • Defining the bias as 'believing evidence that supports you' rather than examining how evidence was selected and when search stopped.
  • Using the label primarily on opponents instead of changing your own research design to make disconfirmation easier.

8In your work

The psychological counterpart of Popper's point, and the reason the fix must be procedural rather than attitudinal. Assign someone to try to break the result; do not rely on wanting to be objective.

9Check yourself

You run specifications until the expected sign appears, then stop and report the successful version. Where exactly is the confirmation bias?

Show answer

In the asymmetric search and stopping rule. The reported estimate may be computed correctly, but the process selectively samples the specification space until it produces confirmatory evidence.
