Under independence and individual competence above chance, majority judgment becomes increasingly reliable as the group grows.
1The problem it solves
The Condorcet theorem formalizes why aggregating many modestly competent judgments can outperform a single expert. But its power comes from assumptions that social systems routinely violate—especially independence. Herding, common information, correlated incentives, and shared models can make a thousand votes behave epistemically like one.
2The idea
If each voter is even slightly better than chance and votes independently, the probability that the majority is right approaches certainty as the group grows.
3Origin & context
Formulated by the Marquis de Condorcet in the eighteenth century as part of mathematical analysis of collective decision-making. Modern social epistemology uses it to clarify when democracy, committees, prediction aggregation, and crowds can possess epistemic advantages.
4Canonical example
A thousand slightly-better-than-random judges beat one expert. The condition doing all the work is independence.
5Objections & replies
Objection. Voters are not independent; they consume the same media and influence one another.
Reply. Exactly. The theorem is conditional, not a blanket defense of majority rule. Correlation can dramatically reduce the effective sample size, which is why source independence is the key practical variable.
Objection. Some individuals are worse than chance or have systematically biased incentives.
Reply. Then larger groups can make things worse rather than better. The theorem’s competence assumption must be defended, and weighting or institutional design may be preferable to simple majority aggregation.
6Don't confuse it with
Condorcet theorem vs. wisdom of crowds in general
Condorcet is a precise result for binary judgments under specific competence and independence conditions. ‘Wisdom of crowds’ is a broader family of phenomena.
Independence vs. diversity
People can be demographically or ideologically diverse while their errors remain correlated through common data or methods.
7Common mistakes
- Counting heads instead of estimating effective independent information sources.
- Invoking the theorem when each member is simply repeating the same analyst, model, or upstream source.
8In your work
The formal case for aggregation, and the exact reason cascades are so destructive: they destroy the independence the theorem requires while leaving the appearance of a large sample.
9Check yourself
One hundred analysts independently receive the same flawed vendor dataset and all reach the same conclusion. Does Condorcet give you strong confidence?
Show answer
No. Their judgments are highly correlated through a common error source. The apparent group size is 100, but the effective independent evidential base may be close to one.
