Aumann's agreement theorem

Robert Aumann
Raphael, The School of Athens, 1509–1511

Aumann’s agreement theorem shows that ideal Bayesian agents with common priors cannot “agree to disagree” once their posterior beliefs are common knowledge.

1The problem it solves

Persistent disagreement feels normal, but the theorem reveals how much hidden asymmetry it requires. If two perfectly rational Bayesian agents begin from the same prior and each knows the other’s posterior, and knows that the other knows, and so on, their posteriors must coincide. Real disagreement therefore diagnoses failure of at least one idealizing condition.

2The idea

Two rational agents with common priors, who each know the other's posterior, cannot agree to disagree. Persistent disagreement between them is formally impossible.

3Origin & context

Robert Aumann proved the theorem in 1976. It is a result in interactive epistemology, relying on common priors, Bayesian conditioning, and common knowledge. Its practical importance is not that humans satisfy the theorem but that the theorem provides a checklist for why they do not.

4Canonical example

Formally proven, and almost never observed. Which tells you at least one condition fails in every real disagreement.

5Objections & replies

Objection. The common-prior assumption is unrealistic and may hide the entire disagreement.

Reply. Yes. Different priors are one obvious route to persistent disagreement. The theorem then becomes diagnostic: ask whether the crux is prior beliefs, private evidence, non-Bayesian updating, or lack of common knowledge rather than treating disagreement as primitive.

Objection. Humans cannot achieve infinite common knowledge of one another’s posteriors.

Reply. Correct. Finite communication and strategic behavior break the idealization. Again, the theorem is most useful as a benchmark showing which information or rationality friction must be present for disagreement to persist.

6Don't confuse it with

Common knowledge and shared information

A fact can be known by everyone without everyone knowing that everyone knows it, and so on. Common knowledge is a much stronger recursive condition.

Aumann and averaging

The theorem does not say two people should average their probabilities. Under its assumptions, fully shared posteriors converge because information is recursively incorporated.

7Common mistakes

  • Using Aumann to call real disagreement irrational without checking the common-prior and common-knowledge assumptions.
  • Treating a stated posterior as transparent evidence when strategic incentives may make people misreport beliefs.

8In your work

Locates the problem precisely. Persistent disagreement is about priors or about information — never about “we just see it differently”, which is not an available explanation.

9Check yourself

Two Bayesian analysts publicly know each other’s posterior but continue to disagree. What does the theorem tell you to look for rather than simply calling one irrational?

Show answer

A failed assumption: different priors, private information not fully revealed, lack of common knowledge, different models, non-Bayesian updating, or strategic reporting. Persistent disagreement identifies a wedge.
