Joseph Wright of Derby, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768

Scientific explanation asks not merely whether a model predicts a phenomenon, but what relation—lawlike, causal, mechanistic, or unifying—makes the phenomenon intelligible.

1The problem it solves

Prediction and explanation can come apart. Hempel’s deductive-nomological model captured one ideal: derive the event from laws plus conditions. Counterexamples showed that derivability alone misses direction and relevance; the height of a flagpole explains its shadow, but the shadow length does not symmetrically explain the height. Later accounts emphasize causes, mechanisms, or unification.

2The idea

What makes something an explanation rather than a description? Hempel's answer: derive the phenomenon from a general law plus initial conditions. Later accounts appeal to causal mechanisms or to unification instead.

3Origin & context

Carl Hempel and Paul Oppenheim formalized the deductive-nomological model in the mid-twentieth century. Wesley Salmon developed causal-statistical approaches; Philip Kitcher emphasized unification. The succession shows that “explanation” is itself a contested epistemic achievement.

4Canonical example

The flagpole's height explains the shadow's length. The shadow's length does not explain the height — although the derivation runs both ways.

5Objections & replies

Objection. Prediction is all science needs; explanation adds metaphysical storytelling.

Reply. Instrumentalists can take that line, but explanation supports intervention, transfer, debugging, and counterfactual reasoning in ways fit alone often does not. The extra value becomes practical when regimes change.

Objection. Causal explanation simply replaces one unexplained notion with another—causation.

Reply. True as a philosophical pressure. Modern causal frameworks make the assumptions and counterfactual structure explicit, which improves discipline even if the metaphysics of causation remains debated.

6Don't confuse it with

Explanation vs. prediction

A model can predict accurately for the wrong reason or via correlation. Explanation aims at why or how, often requiring asymmetry or mechanism.

Explanation vs. description

A detailed description can summarize patterns without identifying why the pattern obtains or what would change it.

7Common mistakes

  • Calling a high-R² or accurate forecast an explanation without a story about relevance, mechanism, or counterfactual dependence.
  • Demanding one universal form of explanation across physics, biology, economics, and historical sciences.

8In your work

A clean test for whether your model explains or merely fits: fitting is symmetric, explaining is not.

9Check yourself

A model forecasts defaults well because it uses a proxy tightly correlated with distress, but the proxy has no stable causal relation. Does forecasting success establish explanation?

Show answer

No. It establishes predictive usefulness under the observed regime. Explanation requires an account of why the relation holds and whether it would survive interventions or changes in the data-generating process.
