Interpretations of probability

von Mises · Popper · Carnap · de Finetti
Claude Monet, Impression, Sunrise, 1872

Probability can mean long-run frequency, physical propensity, logical support, or rational degree of belief—and many disputes arise from switching interpretations midstream.

1The problem it solves

A number such as “30% chance” looks unambiguous until we ask what in the world the 30% refers to. Repeated frequencies fit repeatable events; propensity theories treat chance as a property of setups; logical interpretations treat probability as evidential relation; subjective Bayesians treat it as coherent credence. The interpretation determines what counts as evidence and what statements are meaningful.

2The idea

What a probability actually is: a long-run relative frequency, a physical propensity of a setup, a logical relation between propositions, or a rational agent's degree of belief.

3Origin & context

Major twentieth-century lines include frequentism associated with von Mises, propensity views associated with Popper and others, logical probability in Carnap, and subjective probability in Ramsey and de Finetti. Modern statistics inherits rather than eliminates these philosophical differences.

4Canonical example

“A 30% chance of rain tomorrow” — but tomorrow happens exactly once. Which interpretation makes that sentence meaningful?

5Objections & replies

Objection. Different interpretations are just semantics; the same probability calculus applies.

Reply. The calculus can be shared while the inferential meaning differs. A confidence interval, a physical chance, and a personal credence can use the same numbers but answer different questions and support different updates.

Objection. Subjective probabilities permit arbitrary personal beliefs.

Reply. Bayesian coherence constrains relationships among credences, and evidence drives updating, but priors still create latitude. Objective Bayes and calibration criteria are attempts to narrow that latitude.

6Don't confuse it with

Frequentist probability vs. frequentist inference

A frequency interpretation of probability is philosophical; frequentist statistical procedures add sampling rules, error rates, and long-run guarantees.

Chance vs. uncertainty

Chance may be treated as an objective feature of a process; uncertainty can describe an agent’s state of information even when the underlying event is fixed.

7Common mistakes

  • Using “probability” in a memo without clarifying whether it is model frequency, physical risk, posterior credence, or decision weight.
  • Interpreting a one-off forecast as a literal long-run frequency without specifying the reference class.

8In your work

The Bayesian-versus-frequentist fight in statistics IS this dispute. Recognising that converts an unresolvable methods argument into a philosophical one you can actually adjudicate.

9Check yourself

What does “there is a 30% chance this firm defaults next year” mean if the event occurs only once?

Show answer

The sentence needs an interpretation: perhaps a calibrated credence, a model-based frequency over a reference class, or a propensity-like risk. The number alone does not settle the ontology.
